No. 3 and the defending national champion Minnesota Duluth snapped No. 1 University of Minnesota 16-game win streak with a 4-2 loss tonight at Ridder Arena. The Golden Gophers drop to 21-3-1 overall and are handed just their second loss in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action at 16-2-1.
Gigi Marvin broke the scoreless tie when she fired in a beautiful top-shelf shot for her 19th goal of the season. Jen Schoullis won the faceoff and placed the puck behind her. In a UMD breakdown, Marvin was left all alone in between the hash marks and she rifled in a shot at 16:15 in the first.
UMD responded with a goal from Haley Irwin at 7:06 in the second to knot the game at a 1-1 tie. Jaimie Horton gave the Gophers a short lead when she scored her third goal in two games at 13:49 in the second. Jocelyne Lamoureux took the initial shot, which was saved by UMD goalie Johanna Ellison. However, Horton was there to add the rebound attempt. Jen Schoullis added the assists to put the Gophers up, 2-1.
However, UMD went on to score three goals in the remainder of the second for a 4-2 lead after two periods. Irwin scored her second goal of the period at 15:36 on a power-play goal. The Bulldogs added to their lead when Laura Fridfinnson scored a short-handed goal at 17:15. While on the penalty kill, Jocelyne Larocque got the puck out of the zone. Fridfinnson went on a breakaway. Gopher goalie Alyssa Grogan had the first save, but couldn't stop the rebound attempt. The Bulldogs added their second power-play goal of the game when Pernilla Winberg scored at 18:52. The goal went under review to see if Winberg was in the crease, but the goal stood as the Bulldogs held the two-goal lead.
Minnesota outshot the Bulldogs in every period, including a 13-5 margin in the first and a 12-3 margin in the third. The Gophers were 0-for-5 on the power-play, while UMD's three at the end of the second period were during special teams. The Bulldogs were 2-for-6 on the power-play and scored a short-handed goal, the third allowed this season by the Gophers.
Alyssa Grogan was handed her first loss of her Gopher career and now sits at 9-1-1 when she had 14 saves. Ellison finished the game with 34 saves and allowed two goals.
Minnesota will look for the split tomorrow at 5:07 p.m.
