COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After securing its third NCAA Division I National Championship in four years, the University of Wisconsin begins the 2009-10 season atop the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Poll. The Badgers grabbed the preseason No. 1 ranking after collecting 190 points and all 19 first-place votes.

Last year's national runner-up Mercyhurst College ranks second with 162 points, with the University of Minnesota (153) and the University of Minnesota Duluth (126) holding the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, respectively. The University of New Hampshire (113) rounds out the top five.

Along with seven non-conference matchups on Friday (Oct. 2), the Hockey East Association and Western Collegiate Hockey Association begin conference play when the University of Maine visits Providence College and No. 1 Wisconsin hosts the University of North Dakota.

NOTES: During the 2008-09 season, the University of Wisconsin held the No. 1 ranking for 16 USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Polls ... ECAC Hockey, the HEA and WCHA each have three teams ranked in the top 10. Mercyhurst is the only College Hockey America team ranked ... A total of 14 teams received votes.

ABOUT THE POLL: The 13th annual USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women’s College Hockey Poll is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association. The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the four NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey Magazine, the most widely distributed hockey magazine in the world.
