Bantams shut out Beacons 1-0
Maxwell notches first collegiate shutout
Trinity (Conn.) Athletics
Boston, Mass. -- Junior forward Brigitte Cellino (Buffalo, N.Y.) netted the game's lone goal and freshman goaltender Kristen Maxwell (Nashville, Tenn.) made it stand up with 19 saves to earn the shutout victory as the visiting Trinity College Bantams defeated the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons 1-0 to capture the championship of the Fourth Annual Codfish Bowl Women's Ice Hockey Tournament. The Bantams, ranked No. 9 in the nation, won their fourth consecutive Women's Codfish Bowl in as many appearances and improved to 7-1-1 on the season, while the Beacons, fell to 5-6.
After a scoreless first period, Cellino's game-winner came early in the second period when she advanced the puck ahead to freshman forward Emily Kleidon who fired a shot that ricocheted off the nearside post past UMass Boston junior goaltender Leah Hallett. Cellino collected the rebound and calmly potted the only goal her team would need with16:30 to play in the middle stanza. Maxwell and the Bantam defense withstood a pair of Bantam penalties late in the second period, while Hallett kept her team within one goal the rest of the way. In a last chance scoring effort, the Beacons pulled Hallett for the final 2:02 of regulation to gain the extra skater advantage but the Bantams held strong behind Maxwell in net to hang on for the 1-0 win. Kleidon had a chance for an insurance goal with just under two minutes left in regulation, but Mass.-Boston senior Jazz Webber guessed right on Kleidon's empty-net bid to stop the puck in front of the crease.
Both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play while Trinity held a 25-19 shots advantage. Hallett finished the game with 24 saves and made her 1,700 career save midway through the first period of play. Maxwell improves to 3-1-0 on the year, notching her first collegiate shutout. Trinity senior captain forward Kim Weiss, who had a goal and an assist in yesterday's 3-1 semifinal win over St. Mary's (Minn.) was named the tournament MVP, while junior forward Celia Colman-McGaw and sophomore blueliner Britney Ryan joined Weiss on the all-tournament team.
