Courtesy of CabriniRADNOR, Pa. - The 12th-ranked Cabrini men's lacrosse team started the 2010 season off on the right foot Wednesday afternoon, rolling to a 16-7 win at Edith Robb Dixon Field versus Fairleigh Dickinson University. Senior attackman Casey Grugan (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley HS) tallied four points and eclipsed a 33-year-old NCAA Division III record in the victory.
Grugan's goal at the 11:11 mark of the first quarter extended his consecutive goals streak to 55 games, surpassing John Cheek's (Washington College) 54-game mark that stretched from March 18, 1974 - April 9, 1977. The two-time All-America selection started his run versus Hampden-Sydney College March 17, 2007.
Grugan also extended his consecutive points streak to a nation's-best 58 games. He has recorded 49 career multi-point games and 45 career multi-goal games in just over three full seasons as a Cavalier.
Grugan, twice selected a U.S. Intercollegiate All-American in 2008 and 2009, lists second all-time at Cabrini in career points, notching 241. He is now just 16 points shy of passing former Cavalier teammate Scott Reimer (256; 2006-09).
Junior midfielder Paul Skulski (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley HS) and freshman midfielder Andrew Protenic (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East HS) also tallied four points, each scoring one goal and serving three assists. Protenic scored the first goal of his Cabrini career at the 8:50 mark of the first quarter.
Junior attackman Jordan Coeyman (New Hope, Pa./New Hope - Solebury HS), junior midfielder Dan Terenick (Woodlynn, Pa./Ridley HS) and sophomore midfielder Joe Arrell each contributed three points. Coeyman and Arrell found the back of the cage three times, while Terenick posted two scores and one helper.
Junior defenseman Steve Heaps (Street, Md./North Harford HS) and freshman attackman Bobby Thorp (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee HS) joined Protenic in scoring their first goals as Cavaliers. Thorp recorded his lone tally of the game with 32 left in the first quarter. Heaps raced down the field uncontested and bounced home his only tally at the 6:44 mark of the second quarter.
Heaps led the Blue & White with a team-high seven groundballs. Freshman midfielder Joe Hughes (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh HS) collected six.
Junior midfielder Joe Strain (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) recorded six victories at the face-off X in eight attempts. Junior face-off specialist Mike Gurenlian (Springfield, Pa./Springfield Delco HS) went 8 for 15 in the circle.
Cabrini head coach Steve Colfer, who began his 10th season at the helm of the Cavaliers with his 124th career win, elected to start freshman goalkeeper Erick Zarzecki (Owings Mills, Md./Pikesville HS) between the pipes. Zarzecki went the distance and tallied 12 saves.
The Blue & White led 4-1 after the first quarter and raced to an 11-4 advantage at the intermission. Coeyman netted each of his three goals in the second period.
Kevin Shadiack and Jake Wunsch led the Devils' attack, each registering three points. Shadiack found the back of the net three times, while Wunsch paired two goals with one assist.
FDU goalkeeper Alex Kajencki totaled 13 saves.
The victory is the Cavaliers' fifth in their last seven season-opening games. Also, the Blue & White improves its record at home to 28-4 since the 2007 season.
Cabrini (1-0) resumes play Saturday, Feb. 27 at local-rival Haverford College at 3:30 p.m. The Cavaliers have won each of the last four meetings versus the Black Squirrels, including a 13-10 victory in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
