BALTIMORE, Md. — No. 20 Loyola defeated visiting Hobart 11-8 in an ECAC Lacrosse League game on Senior Day at Ridley Athletic Complex. The victory clinched a berth for Loyola into the four-team ECAC Championships.
After Hobart (5-8 overall, 2-3 ECAC) tied the score at 8-8 with 8.4 seconds remaining in the third quarter, John Schiavone won the ensuing faceoff and dished it off to Mike Sawyer, who scored his second goal of the game with just four ticks remaining to give the Greyhounds (8-3 overall, 4-2 ECAC) the lead for good at 9-8.
Cam Stone gave the Statesmen an early 1-0 lead with a goal 2-minutes, 18-seconds into the game, but Loyola responded with a 3-0 run on goals by Matt Langan, Sawyer and Stephen Murray to give Loyola a 3-1 lead with 5:10 remaining in the first quarter. The goal by Murray was the first of two extra-man goals by the Greyhounds.
Hobart tied the score early in the second quarter, but Loyola would use another 4-0 run with goals by Langan, Murray and two by Patrick Fanshaw to take a 7-3 lead with 1:19 remaining in the second quarter.
Four consecutive goals by Hobart tied the score again, but Davis Butts scored with 3:51 remaining in the third quarter to give the Greyhounds the lead again at 8-7. Loyola would add two more goals in the fourth quarter by Scott Ratliff and Chris Basler to account for the final margin.
Fanshaw finished with a team-high three points on two goals and an assist while Ratliff and Basler both added a goal and an assist apiece. Jake Hagelin had seven saves for Loyola and the Greyhounds out-shot Hobart 41-30 while collecting 34 groundballs to 26 by the Statesmen.
