MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Middlebury will make its sixth appearance in the NCAA Championship game in the last seven years after a 14-12 win over Nazareth in a semifinal contest at Alumni Stadium. The Panthers will take on Salisbury, a 13-11 winner over Roanoke, in the NCAA Championship game on Sunday, May 29th at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Nazareth came out strong, dominating play early on. The Golden Flyers led 2-0 before Nick Bastis put Middlebury on the board at the 10-minute mark. Bryan Adams scored a man-up goal with a high shot at 8:20 before Dave Leach found J.P. Coviello in transition to make it a 3-2 game with 4:50 left in the first quarter. Nazareth increased its lead to 4-2 with 3:14 as Chris Balash scored with a bouncing shot after a nice feed from Bryan Coon. The quarter ended with Nazareth holding an 11-6 shots advantage.
Middlebury came out flying in the second quarter, out-shooting Nazareth 21-4, taking an 8-7 lead into the break. Aaron Herter tied the game 41 seconds later before Coviello gave the Panthers their first lead of the game as he scored with an outside shot from 15 feet away. Travis Meyer scored the fourth tally in the four-goal run at 12:04, before Ryan Hotaling answered at 9:05 with a one-on-goal goal in transition. A great defensive poke-check by Ed Brown set up Middleburys next goal as he carried the ball down the field before finding Henry Sheehan for the fast break goal. Nazareth cut the lead to 7-6 with a man-up goal from Adams at 2:06, before Jim Cabrera scored by snapping in a ground ball just outside the crease. The Golden Flyers made it an 8-7 game at the half as Balash converted with three seconds left, following a Nazareth timeout.
Nazareth had a strong third quarter, winning four of five face-offs en route to a 10-9 lead. Hotaling ripped a shot to the far post to tie the game at eight, before Chip Campbell scored for Middlebury with a bouncing shot after a lengthy drive down the field. Adams found Hotaling for two goals in a 1:50 span to give the Nazareth a one-goal lead after three quarters of play.
Middlebury tied the game at the 11:07 mark of the fourth quarter as Jamie Duke scored after a pair of nice moves down low. Neither team would score for over five minutes before the Panthers regained the lead on a similar goal by Duke at the 5:55 mark. Nazareth came back with 4:01 remaining as Coon ripped a shot from the left wing for a man-up goal, forcing the games fifth tie of the afternoon. Middlebury won the ensuing face-off, as Dave Leach scored with an outside shot into the top corner at the 3:19 mark. The Panthers won the next face-off, with Dave Campbell winning the ground ball to Chip Campbell, who drove straight to the goal and scored just 14 seconds later. Trailing 13-11, Nazareth won the face-off, before Hotaling scored with a high hard shot cutting to the goal with 2:47 remaining. Middlebury gained a little breathing room with 1:33 to go, as Cabrera scored on an open net with the Nazareth goalkeeper out of the cage, pressuring an attackman. Nazareth had a chance to score late, but a penalty at the 1:07 mark put an end their hopes.
