April 26, 2009
RICHMOND, Va. (April 25, 2009) -- The field is set for the 2009 CAA Men's Lacrosse Championships. A 10-8 win for Drexel over Delaware in Saturday's regular-season finale set the four-team field, while Hofstra's 10-3 win over Villanova finalized the pairings.
The tournament opens with a pair of semifinal contests Wednesday, April 29. Top-seeded and ninth-ranked Hofstra (11-2, 6-0 in CAA) hosts No. 4 Villanova (9-5, 3-3 in CAA) at 7 p.m., while second-seeded Towson (6-8, 4-2 in CAA) entertains No. 3 Drexel (7-7, 3-3 in CAA) at 7:30 p.m. The winners will meet Saturday, May 2, in the CAA Men's Lacrosse Championship game at the site of the highest remaining seed. Opening faceoff time of the Championship game will be determined following the semifinal contests.
Hofstra is the top seed for the second time in its span of seven-straight championships appearances. The Pride finished the regular-season league slate with an unblemished mark of 6-0, making them the league's fifth undefeated No. 1 seed and the first since Hofstra went 6-0 in 2006.
Towson, making its sixth appearance in the CAA Championships, has played a home semifinal game every year it has earned a championships berth. Drexel earned a bid into the Championships for the third-straight season with a win over Delaware in the finale, and garnered the No. 3 seed by way of its win over Villanova earlier in the season. Villanova, making its sixth championships appearance, will face Hofstra for the second time in five days Wednesday evening.
