DELAWARE, OHIO — Junior midfielder Ricky Scheetz (Dublin/Jerome) and senior attacker Karl Zimmerman (Utica, Mich./Brother Rice) scored goals that brought the Bishops within 6-2, but Denison pulled away during the second half to defeat Ohio Wesleyan in a first-round game of the NCAA Division III tournament on Wednesday in Granville.
The Big Red broke the ice with a Brady Burton goal just over 6 minutes into the game, then took a 3-0 lead on a pair of Burton goals just 39 seconds apart. Matt Verklin, Alex Hardt, and Emmett Jones followed with scores during the final 3 minutes of the first quarter to increase the Denison lead to 6-0.
After Jones scored, Scheetz won the ensuing face-off, went straight down the field and scored in a matter of just 6 seconds to put Ohio Wesleyan on the scoreboard.
The Ohio Wesleyan defense clamped down on the Big Red, holding the hosts scoreless during the second quarter, but Denison's defense was almost as good, allowing the Bishops only a goal by Zimmerman with 1:36 left in the first half.
The Big Red defense returned the favor by keeping the Bishops off the scoreboard during the second half. Meanwhile, Denison got goals from Hardt and Burton in both the third and fourth quarters to pull away.
Sophomore Jud Hall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) played all 60 minutes in the Ohio Wesleyan crease, making a season-high 15 saves.
Burton finished with a game-high 5 goals and added 2 assists for Denison.
Greg Shannon turned aside 11 shots in the Big Red crease.
