RIT Wins First NCAA Game In A Decade By Dropping Connecticut College

NEW LONDON, CT -- The RIT men's lacrosse team (14-5) advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2010 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship with an 11-9 win over Connecticut College (14-3) on Saturday. The Tigers will face SUNY Cortland in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, May 19 in Cortland, New York. It was RIT's first win in the NCAA Tournament since the 2000 season.
RIT scored two goals in the final 1:07 to break a tie game and advance on. Junior midfielder Chris Cherami (Olwick, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) scored the game-winner on a sweeping drive with 1:07 remaining in regulation to give the Tigers a 10-9 lead.
Alex Crepinsek (Mississuaga, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) scored on an assist from Iric Bressler (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) into an open net with 50 seconds remaining to seal the victory for the Tigers.
RIT out shot Connecticut College 36-28 and won the ground ball battle 33-30. The Tigers went 1-for-4 with the man advantage while allowing two man-up goals on three opportunities.
Empire 8 Co-Player of the Year Jordan MacIntosh (Oakville, ON/Holy Trinity) paced the Tigers with two goals and an assist. Bressler had two goals and three assists, while Kelso Davis (Freeport, ME/Deerfield Academy) added two goals and two assists.Cherami scored twice, including the game winner.
Senior Jerry Ragonese (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) won 16-of-24 face-offs and grabbed 10 ground balls. MJ Kiekebelt (Caledon, Ontario/St. Andrews College/Aurora) had four ground balls and MacRae had three.
Junior goalie Robert Tonnessen (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) picked up his 12th win of the season making six saves.
RIT led 4-3 after the first quarter. Davis and Sean Gillies (Oakville, Ontario/Albany Academy) scored for the Tigers inside the final 10 seconds of the quarter to give the Tigers the one-goal advantage.
Conn College came back and scored two straight goals in the second quarter to take a 5-4 lead. MacIntosh's tied the score at 5-5 with his first of the game with six seconds remaining in the half.
RIT came out firing in the third quarter scoring three straight goals and taking an 8-5 lead. MacIntosh scored a man-up goal with 7:51 remaining in the third to give the Tigers a 6-5 lead.
Bressler tallied two unassisted goals late in the quarter to give the Tigers their largest lead of the game.
Ryan Hayes scored for the Camels with five seconds remaining in the third to break the Tigers' momentum and cut RIT's lead to 8-6.
Mark Mangano made it 8-7 early in the fourth quarter with his lone tally of the game.
Senior David Burke (Fairport, NY/Fairport) made it a two-goal advantage for RIT with an unassisted goal with 9:36 remaining in the game.
Eric Doran and John Lyons scored back-to-back goals for the Camels tying the game with 3:52 to play on Lyons' goal.
RIT staved off an extended possession by Conn College late in the quarter, and senior Dan MacRae (Oakville, Ontario/Holy Trinity) forced a Camels turnover and the Tigers were able to clear the ball.
After a RIT timeout, Cherami took the ball at the top of the restraining box and swept in to his right. He fired a low shot that beat Conn College goalie Rob Moccia for the game-winning goal.
RIT has won seven straight games and will get another chance at defending champion Cortland. The Red Dragons beat the Tigers 12-11 in overtime back on March 31.
