Consul, Stavrakis each score three goals as No. 1 Cortland dispatches of Aurora
CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Top-ranked opened up a 9-1 lead at the half and went on to defeat Aurora 14-8 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse tournament Saturday. The Red Dragons improved to 18-0 on the season and advanced to play host to Western New England, a 15-12 winner at Nazareth, in a quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday. The Spartans' season ended at 15-4.
Ten different players scored at least one goal for Cortland, Cody Consul and James Stavrakis with three each. Consul also chipped in with an assist. Freshman Zach Hopps tallied one goal and three assists, Brian Winterfeld and Matt Rakoczy each had one goal and one assist and Joe Slavik recorded four assists. Taylor Mendoza, Thomas Casey, Stephen Burke, Mike Cummings and Mike Cantelli notched one goal apiece.
Goalie Mike Kaminski made 10 saves and allowed six goals in 50 minutes, 6 seconds before giving way to Steve Mahle, who stopped one shot and surrendered two goals in the final 9:54. Pat Baldwin won 12 of 19 faceoffs and collected six ground balls, and Billy Davis won all five faceoffs he took and recorded four ground balls. Patrick Brown registered a team-high five ground balls, while Brandon Mulholland scooped up four.
Max Obriecht led the Spartans with two goals and two assists. Garret Rosiek registered two goals and one assist, Pat Diorka and Justin Bose each scored twice and Zachary Olsen and Jordan Williams contributed one assist apiece.
Goalie Adam Holka turned aside 16 shots. Obriecht collected a game-high six ground balls, and Spencer Fuqua recorded five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
The Red Dragons opened up a 4-0 lead in the first quarter as four different players scored. Obriecht put the Spartans on the scoreboard with a man-up goal 11 seconds before the end of the period to make it 4-1. Cortland built what seemed like a commanding 9-1 lead at intermission as the Red Dragons outscored Aurora 5-0 in the second quarter. Stavrakis scored two of his goals and Slavik picked up a pair of assists during the quarter.
Aurora opened the third quarter by scoring three of the first four goals to pull to within 10-4 with 9:25 remaining. Cortland answered with scores from Casey and Cantelli a little more than two minutes apart to push the Red Dragons' lead back to eight at 12-4. Rosiek tallied a goal with 3.5 seconds on the clock to end the quarter and Bose brought the Spartans to within 12-6 with a goal just 35 seconds into the final quarter. Cortland quelled any chance for an upset as Consul and Stavrakis each scored his third goal of the night to make it a 14-6 game with 9:44 remaining. Aurora closed the scoring with goals from Bose at 8:26 and Obriecht at 1:34 for the 14-8 final.
