Former Limestone assistant Stewart named head coach at Mount Union
ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Brian Stewart has been named head men's lacrosse coach at Mount Union.
Stewart spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Limestone.
"Coach Stewart's experience, drive and dedication to coaching lacrosse, mentoring student-athletes and building future leaders has made him the ideal choice to lead our program," athletic director Larry Kehres said. "All of us at Mount Union look forward to working with him as we move our men's lacrosse program forward."
Prior to returning to Limestone, Stewart spent five years serving in the United States Navy. He was stationed at the Naval Academy Prep School as part of the athletic department. He was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade in 2008 and full Lieutenant in '10.
Stewart served as the head lacrosse coach of the Naval Academy Preparatory School from 2006-11 and was responsible for all facets of the program. Among his many accomplishments in that role were coaching 27 high school All-Americans and the graduation of 64 of the 72 lacrosse recruits sent to the Naval Academy Preparatory School infive years.
His additional duties as a commissioned officer included serving as the event coordinator for home athletic contests, an assistant lifting coach, maintaining athletic facilities and serving as an academic adviser to all student-athletes with a grade point average below 2.5.
As a men's lacrosse player at Limestone from 1998-2002, Stewart played for NCAA Division II national championship teams in '00 and '02, an NCAA finalist in '01 and four consecutive Deep South Conference championship teams that went undefeated in the regular season.
"Throughout all of my experiences in the Navy and in coaching, I have strived to instill the values of hard work, discipline, dedication, and enthusiasm within my players; which I believe translates into a high level of success within the classroom and on the field of play," Stewart said. "My desire as the head of the Mount Union men's lacrosse program is to help uphold the pride and traditions already within this great university."
