Two-time defending champion Adelphi claimed the No. 1 spot in Lacrosse Magazine’s 2011 preseason Division II women’s poll. The Panthers’ ranking comes behind the return of junior attacker Claire Petersen, who earned the magazine’s honor for preseason player of the year.
The Panthers posted a record of 19-1 this in 2010 and became the first program in Division II history to capture back-to-back national titles. Adelphi owns a 51-2 record during the past three seasons, with three consecutive NCAA Division II semifinals appearances.
Petersen posted an impressive 2010 campaign as she led the nation in scoring with 128 points. She led second-place Sherry Darrell of Southern New Hampshire by 23 points and was joined by Ally Keirn of Mercyhurst (104 points) as the only three players in Division II to score more than 100 points. Petersen was named the IWLCA Division II Attacker of the Year while helping the Panthers to the highest scoring offense in the nation.
Following the Panthers in poll is Lock Haven at No. 2, while Adelphi’s cross-town rival, C.W. Post, sits in the third spot. Division II newcomer LeMoyne was slotted at number four and Limestone rounds out the top five.
