Ferris propels UMass to win at BU

BOSTON – Katie Ferris’ first collegiate goal stood as the game-winner, coming with five seconds left in regulation, as the UMass women’s lacrosse team remained undefeated with a 13-12 win at No. 18 Boston University. The back-and-forth affair featured six lead changes and seven ties until Ferris settled things with five seconds to go. Jackie Lyons led all scorers with four goals, while Haley Smith, Jesse O’Donnell and Cori Murray each scored twice.

Rachel Collins and Hannah Frey each tallied three goals for the Terriers (0-1), while Erica Baumgartner tied Lyons for a game-high five points (1g, 4a).

Katie Florence earned her third win of the year making six saves while being credited with a caused turnover and groundball, as well. Kim Elsworth took the loss for Boston University making five saves.

After the teams spent much of the first half trading goals, Lyons and Lauren Terracciano each scored in the final five minutes before halftime to give the Minutewomen a 6-5 lead.

Lyons scored again 3:16 into the second half, but the Terriers responded 24 seconds later to make it 7-6.

The Terriers took an 11-9 lead with just under 10 minutes to go on a Kristen Mogavero goal.

Lyons set up Murray’s second goal of the day to pull UMass back within one, 12-11, before tying the game with 3:04 left.

The Terriers won the ensuing draw control following Lyons’ game-tying goal, but the Minutewomen forced a turnover with 90 seconds left in the game. Ali Houlis collected the groundball and after a good clear attempt UMass called timeout with 1:18 remaining.

With time running down, O’Donnell was able to find Ferris in a scrum of people putting the pass into her stick to set-up the game-winning goal.

The Terriers held a 27-to-19 advantage in shots and forced UMass into 19 turnovers while committing 14. The Minutewomen held edges in draw controls (14-to-12), and groundballs (14-to-12).
