No. 10 Gannon holds on for victory
Lady Knights score five of first six goals and cruise to win
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The No. 10 Gannon women's lacrosse team opened an early 5-1 lead and held off Queens (N.C.) 12-10 on Thursday afternoon.
Gannon got off to a quick start, scoring five of the first six goals. Jess Fugate and Sarah Grzybinski opened the scoring, before Mary Eshenour tallied the final three scores of the run.
Queens rallied midway through the first half with a flurry of three consecuitve goals, bringing the Royals within 6-5 at the 6:21 mark. However, Gannon responded with three unanswered goals of its own in the final 4:19 to take a 9-5 advantage to the break. Fugate, Eshenour and Rachel DerCola accounted for late blitz.
The second half was played on even terms as the two programs exchanged goals for the first 24 minutes. Each team scored three goals during that time span, putting the Gannon lead at 12-8 with 6:36 to play.
Queens tried to rally with consecutive goals in the span of 33 seconds, but the Royals were unable to find the back of the net in the final four minutes and 53 seconds of regulation.
Eshenour led all scorers with four goals, giving her 17 during the first three matches. DerCola was close behind with three scores and one assist.
Fugate and Grzybinski chipped in two goals each. Kimberly Neagle also had a goal and Caitlyn Fisher dished out one assist. Margaret Maslyn recorded a season-high 10 saves between the pipes, improving to 3-0 during her first collegiate season.
