Maryland derails Georgetown 8-5

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Brittany Dipper tied a career high with 12 saves to anchor yet another solid defensive showing as No. 1 Maryland derailed No. 16 Georgetown 8-5 Thursday night.

With the defense running on all cylinders, the Terrapin attack took full advantage of the few opportunities it was allotted, netting eight of the 13 shots it attempted as Georgetown controlled the majority of the possession via the stall tactic. Katie Schwarzmann led Maryland (18-0) with four goals. Sarah Mollison added two goals and extended her streak to 63 consecutive games with a point.

The Terps picked right up where they left off in the second half of the ACC title game Sunday, outscoring Georgetown 4-1 in the first stanza and sinking four of the mere seven shots it took in the stanza. Maryland jumped out to a 3-0 lead, courtesy of goals from Schwarzmann, Mollison and Alex Aust, and never looked back. Georgetown (8-7) managed four second-half goals, with two coming via free position attempts.

Along with a stellar performance from Dipper in the cage, Brittany Poist tallied a team-high two caused turnovers and two ground balls to lead the Maryland defense.

“Defensively, we played well tonight,” head coach Cathy Reese said. “It was a game where Georgetown wanted to hold possession of the ball and that’s fine. We’ve been playing in quite a few of those games this season.

“We forced them to take some shots they didn’t want to take but our goalkeeper Brittany Dipper was phenomenal in the back for us. She had 12 saves… that’s just fantastic.”
