MADISON, N.J. -- The Drew University womens lacrosse team took care of Gordon College Wednesday night with an 18-2 home victory in the opening game of the NCAA Division III Womens Lacrosse Tournament. Alyssa Bobe (Greenfield, MA) and Anne Luetzow (Willow Grove, PA) led the charge with four goals apiece, including three first-half goals from Bobe.
The Rangers, who improve to 14-5 on the season, jumped out to an early lead scoring eight unanswered goals on five different scorers. Rachel Hurvitz, Drews leading scorer on the season, contributed two goals and three assists in that Drew run. Gordons Becca Lambertson (Cumberland, ME) stopped the scoring spree, connecting unassisted at 5:52 for the Fighting Scots first goal of the game. But Courtney Cunningham (Garden City, NY) and Bobe each found the back of the net on feeds from Kaity Ryan (Pennington, NJ) and Luetzow to close out the first half with a10-1 lead for the Rangers.
Luetzow collected her third goal of the game on the other side of the break, followed by a score from Cunningham to make it a 12-1 ballgame at the 26:30 mark. But Lambertson connected again for Gordon on a pass from Holly Wakefield (Essex Junction, VT) to cut the Fighting Scots deficit back to 10. That was as close at Gordon got, however, as the Rangers controlled the remainder of the game to post the 18-2 win and advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1985, where they will take on The College of New Jersey at Gettysburg College Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
Casey OBrien (Oakhurst, NJ) posted eight saves for Drew, while Gordons Tiffany Dyess (Clifton, VA) registered 13 saves for the Fighting Scots as they concluded their season with a 9-7 record.
