Nazareth 17, Western New England 5

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (May 11, 2005) -- Nazareth jumped out to a 3-0 advantage and extended the lead to 7-1 at the half, cruising to a 17-5 victory over visiting Western New England in the opening round of the 2005 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Flyers advance to the second round, traveling to #2 Middlebury on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

Melissa Passno (pictured; Penn Yan Acadaemy/Penn Yan, NY) scored two of her team leading four goals in Nazareth's opening run, giving the Golden Flyers an early 3-0 lead at the 14:34 mark. After Alyson Nowell (Agawam/Feeding Hills, MA) scored the first of her four goals to put Western New England on the board, Nazareth went on a 7-0 run to pull away, leading 10-1 with 25:14 to play in the second half.

The Golden Flyers held a 43-19 advantage on shots for the game and a 67-40 advantage on groundballs. Betsy Carney (Horseheads/Elmira, NY) and Tia Morgia (Watertown/Watertown, NY) scored three goals each for the Golden Flyers. Lindsey Burgess (Newark/Newark, NY) made six saves in goal for Nazareth. Melissa Roy (Sacred Heart/West Haven, CT) made 13 saves in goal for the Golden Bears (11-8).

With the win Nazareth improves to 14-2 on the season and are advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the third time.
