MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team advanced to the Regional Finals of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday with a 16-9 victory over Stevens Institute. The Polar Bears (15-3) tie the school's record for single-season wins with the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. The Ducks end their season with a record of 15-3.
Bowdoin will face Middlebury in the Regional Final on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. with the victor advancing to the NCAA Semifinals at the College of New Jersey on May 21. The game will be a rematch of an April 16 game in Brunswick, when the Panthers beat the Polar Bears in an overtime decision, 12-11.
Colleen McDonald was dominant for Bowdoin early in the game, scoring three goals in the game's first 5:50 to give Bowdoin a 3-1 lead. Trailing 5-3, Stevens received a pair of goals from Valerie Barnhart to tie the game at five with 5:34 left in the first half. Bowdoin then went on a four-goal run to take a 9-5 lead into the intermission. Taylor White netted two of the goals, with three of the four tallies coming in the last 55 seconds of the half.
Bowdoin picked up where they left off as they scored five of the first six goals in the second half to take a 15-7 lead with 11:53 remaining. Five different players scored during the run, including the fifth of the game for McDonald. Kim Mirra ended the run for Stevens at 10:34 to cut the lead to 15-8. Bowdoin answered before Barnhart scored her game-high sixth goal of the game for the Ducks with 1:41 remaining. McDonald ended the game with five goals and two assists to lead Bowdoin, while White netted four goals.
Kendall Cox made 11 saves in goal to pick up the win. Barnhart paced Stevens with seven goals, while Stephanie Linder made 16 saves in net.
