May 14, 2005

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) recorded a career-high six points and Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) scored her 100th collegiate goal as seventh-ranked Gettysburg defeated Ohio Wesleyan 21-4 in the regional semifinals of the 2005 NCAA Division III women's lacrosse championship on Saturday.

Shihadeh netted three goals and added three assists on the day, including three points during the Bullets' 9-0 run in the opening 7 minutes, 4 seconds. Katie Ceglarski (Darien, CT/Darien) scored a team-high four goals and Jenn Kelly (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) handed out four assists to fuel Gettysburg's highest-scoring performance in eight NCAA appearances.

With the win, the Bullets (16-3) advance to meet The College of New Jersey (13-2) in the national quarterfinals on Sunday at 4 p.m. The Lions, ranked third in Division III, blitzed Drew 22-7 in the day's other regional semifinal behind a program-record 12 points from Lauren Dougher.

Kelly added a goal to finish with five points and Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park) also notched five points courtesy of her 10th hat trick of the season and two assists.

Lura Allen posted game highs with two goals, four draw controls and five ground balls for the Battling Bishops (12-4), who were making their first NCAA appearance. Alexa Deaton and Lila Barzegar also scored for Ohio Wesleyan while Maggie Eichenlaub recorded eight saves.

With an early blitz, Gettysburg squared its all-time NCAA record at 4-4 and advanced to within a win of its first trip to the national semifinals.

Lowe needed 35 seconds to reach her milestone goal, converting a draw control win by Quinn Dougherty (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) on the Bullets' first rush of the game. Shihadeh set up Cassidy Zappacosta (Monkton, MD/Maryvale Prep) at 1:57 and Kelly struck 21 seconds later to make it 3-0.

Shihadeh followed with the first of her three goals for a 4-0 lead, forcing an Ohio Wesleyan timeout. Kelly set up goals by Ceglarski and Zappacosta in a span of 44 seconds to make it 6-0. Delauney and Shihadeh sandwiched unassisted goals around a Kelly-to-Ceglarski connection, stretching the lead to 9-0 with 22:56 remaining in the first half.

Allen put the Battling Bishops on the board with back-to-back goals in a span of 2:06, but Gettysburg closed the half with a 3-1 burst before outscoring Ohio Wesleyan 9-1 after the break to lock up its fourth trip to the quarterfinals.

Heather Kelley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) made nine saves in the win, one stop shy of her single-game career high. Ceglarski also led the team with six draw controls while Jamie Heeneke (Pennsauken, NJ/Moorestown) recorded a game-high four caused turnovers.

The Bullets will be seeking their first victory against The College of New Jersey on Sunday. Gettysburg is 0-6 all-time against the Lions, including a 7-6 loss on Apr. 10 at Clark Field.

The two programs are meeting in the national quarterfinals for the second time. TCNJ posted a 16-7 victory over the Bullets in 2000 en route to the program's most recent national championship.
