Virginia 15, Duke 13

May 20, 2005

Annapolis, Md. Tyler Leachman and Amy Appelt each tallied three goals to lead Virginia to a 15-13 victory over Duke in the second game of the 2005 NCAA Womens Lacrosse Semifinals at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md.

With the win, the sixth-seeded and defending national champion Cavaliers advanced to Sundays national championship where they will face top-seeded Northwestern at 2 p.m.

Cary Chasney, Kim Connors and Ashleigh Haas each scored twice for Virginia (17-4), which has now won seven-straight NCAA tournament games. The Cavaliers have advanced to the championship game in each of their five trips to the national semifinals.

The win for Virginia was its first in three tries against the Blue Devils this season. Duke handed the Cavaliers a 16-12 regular season-loss back on April 2, and then pulled out a 9-6 victory in the ACC Tournament championship back on May 1.

Third times a charm, Appelt said. We were all very excited to play. Its great to win against a team like that.

The Blue Devils tied the game at 10-10 with 20:43 to go in the contest on Kristen Waagbos goal, but Virginia responded by reeling off five-straight goals to take control of the game.

We gave up probably eight draws right in a row and that led to their run in the second half, Duke head coach Kerstin Kimel said. That has been a big key for us all season and Virginia did a great job of winning the draws.

QUOTES

Virginia

Julie Myers
Head Coach

Opening statement...

Im incredibly proud of our teams effort tonight. They knew it was going to take a great effort and performance tonight. From top to bottom our girls put their hearts out there on the field. One player fed off the next player and we beat a great Duke team.

On scouting Northwestern...

They are a similar team, but they are a couple of steps better this year. Theyve had a great year and are a terrific program. I expect it to be a tremendous battle that our girls will show up for.

Amy Appelt
Senior Attack

On playing composed...

We played composed today. We knew what we had to do and we went out and accomplished our game plan. We went out and expected to play better and executed. We knew we could play better than the first two teams they saw this year.

On getting to play Duke a third time this season after losing the first two contests...

Third times a charm. We were all very excited to play. Its great to get a win against a team like that.

Elizabeth Pinney
Senior Defense

On Ashleigh Haas play...

Everyone fed off her play tonight, especially her one goal early on. She came down and beat the goalie. She was attacking in the offensive zone tonight.

Duke

Kerstin Kimel
Head Coach

Opening statement...

First of all, I want to say that Im very proud of my team. This group has had a tremendous season. This was a goal of ours all season to get here. Unfortunately, we couldnt win but it doesnt take away from our season. Virginia played a great game and they played the way we expected them to and that was all out.

On losing several draws in the second half...

We gave up probably eight draws right in a row and that led to their run in the second half. That has been a big key for us all season and Virginia did a great job of winning the draws. Our shot selection wasnt great during that stretch, but our kids didnt quit and fought back to get back in the game.

Katie Chrest
Junior Attack

On Amy Appelts style of play...

Her style is so different from everyone else. In addition to her strong physical play, she has a great mental style. Shes strong, confident and knows how to play the game. She believes in her ability and is smart in the offensive zone.

On trying to come from behind...

Theyre defense played really hard and were aggressive. We came back and tied the game, but were not used to playing from behind. We were scrambling around and a lack of discipline was partly to blame for that.

Kristen Wagon
Sophomore Attack

On Dukes offensive scheme...

We wanted to take it one possession at a time and be aggressive on offense. We wanted to take several shots and get them working in the defensive zone.
