(04-01-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team, ranked No. 7 in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Poll, defeated visiting No. 10 Dowling College, 17-7, on Wednesday afternoon at Kayo Field. The Chargers remain undefeated on the season at 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Golden Lions suffer their second defeat of the season, falling to 4-2.

UNH took a quick lead on Wednesday, scoring eight unanswered goals in the first 20 minutes. Mallory Ferrandiz started it all with an unassisted goal just over 30 seconds into the game. Brigid Brady added three over the 20 minute span, while Ashley Ferrandiz netter two. The Golden Lions scored one before halftime in the 21st minute.

The teams exchanged three goals each in the first 18 minutes of the second half, bringing the Chargers lead to 12-5. The Chargers scored five of the final seven goals to widen their lead and take their nine decision of the season.

Brady paced the Chargers with five goals, while Ashley Ferrandiz added four goals and one assist for five points. Freshman Alexis Gabbe scored a career-high three goals on three shots and Sarah LeGoff netted two. Mallory Ferrandiz, Sarah Magnone and Brianna Kenworthy each added a goal each. Mallory Ferrandiz also handed out three assists.

The Chargers held a 22-16 edge in ground balls and won 16-of-26 draw controls. New Haven fired 27 shots and the Golden Lions tallied 22 shots. Maureen Spellman recorded her ninth win of the season for the Chargers with 11 saves.

UNH returns to action on Friday, April 3 when they travel to No. 1 Adelphi University. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
