HANOVER, N.H. – The eighth-ranked Syracuse women's lacrosse squad scored five straight goals to break open a tie game and went on to a 12-9 victory against No. 16 Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H. on Tuesday, April 28. The Orange ends the regular season with a 13-4 record, while Dartmouth goes to 8-7.
Junior Christina Dove (Bel Air, Md.) led Syracuse with six points on five goals and one assist, while senior Katie Rowan added three goals and an assist. With four points, Rowan increased her career point total to 378, which tie her for fifth place on the NCAA Division I all-time scoring list with Temple’s Gail Cummings (1984-88).
Rowan and Dove combined for five of Syracuse’s six goals in the first half. Dove netted the first goal of the game at the 22:54 mark, before Rowan found the back of the net to give SU a 2-0 lead with 22:11 remaining. After Dartmouth cut the lead to one, Rowan and Dove combined for three goals as the Orange took its largest lead of the half, 5-1, with 16:55 left on the clock. The Big Green netted three straight goals to cut the lead to one before senior Bridget Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) found the back of the net off a pass from senior Megan Mosenson (Malvern, Pa.) with 8.5 seconds remaining to give Syracuse a 6-4 halftime lead.
Dartmouth outscored the Orange 3-1 to open the second half as Greta Meyer’s third goal of the game tied the game, 7-7 with 22:22 remaining. Dove and junior Jackie DePetris (Radnor, Pa.) connected on the first of three straight goals 18 second later, sparking the Orange on a 5-0 scoring run that gave Syracuse control of the game. Dove’s goal on an assist from DePetris put Syracuse ahead for good at the 22:04 mark, before Dove returned the favor, assisting on DePetris’ fourth goal of the season. Dove netted her fifth goal of the day, again on an assist from DePetris, and sophomore Tee Ladouceur (Slingerland, N.Y.) and DePetris added goals to give SU its largest lead of the game, 12-7 with 6:59 remaining. Dartmouth recorded the final two goals of the game but it wasn’t enough as Syracuse registered the 12-9 victory.
DePetris tied her career high with four points on two goals and career-best two assists, while Ladouceur, Mosenson and junior Halley Quillinan (Glenmont, N.Y.) each recorded an assist. Meyer led Dartmouth with four goals.
The Orange outshot the Big Green, 30-20, and picked up 16 ground balls to 15 for Dartmouth. Syracuse won 16-of-23 draws, led by a career-high seven by junior Lindsay Rogers (Rochester, N.Y.). Orange goalkeeper Liz Hogan (Victor, N.Y.) recorded five saves, while Dartmouth’s Julie Wadland had nine saves.
Syracuse finishes the regular season with 13 wins. It marks the third straight year the Orange has won at least 13 games. SU recorded 13 wins in 2007 and a school-record 18 games in 2008.
The Orange will learn its postseason fate on Sunday when the NCAA Tournament teams are announced on CBS College Sports from 10 p.m. – 11 p.m.
