NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's women's lacrosse squad dropped a tough 13-9 decision to Mary Washington in a first round NCAA Tournament match late Wednesday night.

The Eagles scored the first two goals and three of the games first four tallies to lead 3-1 with 21:46 left in the opening half. The Captains responded with four straight to take a 5-3 lead with 11:18 left in the first half.

Mary Washington scored three in a row to take a 6-5 lead but Christopher Newport tied it at six with 4:59 left. UMW took a one goal lead at the half when they scored with four minutes remaining.

The Eagles opened the half with a goal to extend their lead to two but CNU countered with two goals to knot the score at 8-all with 25:49 left in the game.

Mary Washington responded with five straight to put the game out of reach. The Captains added a late score with 31 seconds remaining for the final margin.

Alyssa Burke and Mea Arnold led CNU with two goals each. Chrissy Rogers, Meghan Harkey and Liz Klemens each finished with one goal and one assist. Christine Mike and Kaitlin Quigley both scored once and Shayna Sargent had one assist.

UMW out-shot Christopher Newport, 39-21. Gayle Robinson finished with 15 saves in the cage.

The Eagles improve to 14-7 and move on to play Catholic in a second round game Saturday at Catholic. The Captains finish the year 13-7.
