No. 8 West Chester rolls to easy win
Grimwood's six goals lead way for Golden Rams
WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Senior Claire Grimwood tallied six goals while classmate Shannon Hayes scored three goals and added three assists as eighth-ranked West Chester was victorious against ninth-ranked Gannon, 18-5, on a windy and cold Friday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field.
West Chester jumped out to a quick lead on Gannon with four goals in the first five minutes of the contest. Three of those markers came from Grimwood, who matched her career high with six tallies on the day. She also notched six goals against Gannon in last year’s PSAC semifinal. Grimwood has scored 22 goals in five career games opposite the Golden Knights.
The Golden Rams held a 14-2 advantage at halftime, clearly controlling every statistical category. West Chester held Gannon to just six shots in the first half and won 12 of 17 draw controls that enabled the hosts to dictate the pace of the game.
Devon Lotkowski scored all three of her goals in the first half and finished the game with four points. Hayes had collected four of her six points by the break as well. Nicole Pyle potted each of her two goals in the first 30 minutes as well.
West Chester scored the first seven goals of the game before Gannon’s Jess Fugate finally stopped the bleeding at the 20:20 mark. However, the Rams rattled off seven more in the next 16 minutes to put the game out of reach 14-1.
Sarah Grzybinski scored with just under four minutes left in the opener to close out the first-half scoring.
Fugate led Gannon with two goals on the day. She scored a goal in each half for the visitors. Kim Neagle and Rachel DerCola had the other two tallies for the visitors.
MacKenzie O’Keefe made 11 saves going the distance in the cage for West Chester. Margaret Maslyn was credited with five saves – four of those coming in the first half.
Tori Dugan posted three points for West Chester. Erin Oczkowski, Jackie Hoover and Jacki Patterson each scored a goal as well for the Golden Rams.
With the win, West Chester head coach Ginny Martino picked up win No. 199 in her 13-year career on the Rams’ sideline.
