Dowling upsets West Chester
Brookhaven, NY - Cassandra Cronin had a career high seven goals as No. 9 Dowling upset No. 7 West Chester 16-7 in non-conference action at Golden Lions Field. With the win, Dowling improves to 8-2 on the year while West Chester falls to 10-2.
The teams traded goals in the first half but a late Cronin marker with :05 seconds left gave the Golden Lions a 7-6 lead into the half. Dowling came out hot in the second, scoring 9 unanswered goals. That combined with a strong collective effort by the defensive unit anchored by goalie Rachael Goldstein helped Dowling to the landslide victory. Goldstein finished with 16 saves, 12 in the second frame, and five groundballs. Fellow back liners Samantha Titus, Meghan Smith, Kristen Matos and Alana Gund were terrific and held the Golden Rams scoreless for first 29 minutes of the second half. Titus had five groundballs as well and helped the Golden Lions clear the ball a near flawless 21 of 23 opportunities.
Cronin had her best game as a Golden Lion with the seven tallies. Brooke Witkowski finished with two goals and four assists and freshmen Samantha Stavish's streak of consecutive multi-goal games extends to six as she netted two and dished out one assist. Kelly Cefalu and Kelly DiFede each had two goals as well.
West Chester was lead by Claire Grimwood who had three goals before picking up her second yellow card midway through the second half. Between the pipes, Mackenzie O'Keefe had 11 saves for the Golden Rams.
