WEST HAVEN, Conn. — No. 7 New Haven defeated No. 3 C.W. Post 18-17 in overtime on Wednesday afternoon at Kayo Field. The Chargers win against C.W. Post is the first in the program’s 12-year history. New Haven improved to 7-0 on the season, while the Pioneers dropped to 4-1 on the season.
The game featured numerous momentum changes and regulation ended in a 15-15 tie. After scoring the first two goals of the six-minute overtime period, the Chargers rallied to score the game’s final three goals and their first victory against the Pioneers.
New Haven was led by Ashley Ferrandiz with nine total points off four goals and five assists. The individual performance tied the UNH record, which she previously set in 2009, for points in a single game.
Sarah Magnone chipped in with six goals and Alexis Gabbe tabbed four goals and two assists. In goal, New Haven’s Maureen Spellman registered a career day with 18 saves. The senior also led the team with seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. She also intercepted a C.W. Post pass with 1:44 left in overtime, leading to the Chargers’ game-winning goal.
