Wayson’s four goals, three assists power No. 9 York (Pa.) past Goucher in opener

TOWSON, Md. – Ninth-ranked York (Pa.) opened its 2013 campaign on Saturday with an 18-10 victory against Goucher.

The Spartans finished with 10 different players in the scoring column. Senior Kim Wayson, York’s all-time leader in goals scored, recorded four goals and added three assists. Erica Mulford saw all three of her goals come in the first half of play.

Senior Leah Schultz got the game started for the Green and White with back-to-back goals in the opening minutes of the game. The Spartans used the momentum and went on a 5-0 run in the first seven minutes of play. Goucher earned its first goal of the game at 22:47, but York answered back with three. The Spartans closed out the first half with a 5-1 run to lead 14-4 heading into halftime.

In the second half, the Spartans added four points to their total. The Gophers scored four unanswered goals to end the game, but came up short.

Other goal scorers for the Green and White included Sarah Castle and Jenna Hiponia, who recorded two apiece. Megan Stine, Jocelyn Hudson, Kasie White, Kerri Nicolich and Melissa Ritchey each added one.

For the contest, the Spartans outshot the Gophers 31-20. York finished the game with 19 ground balls, 17 draw controls and 17 turnovers. The Gophers finished with 18 ground balls, 13 draw controls and 23 turnovers.

Senior Kelsey Evans earned the win in net for the Spartans. She played a total of 46:06, allowed six goals and made one save. Ashley Smith came in for the Green and White with 13:54 remaining. Smith finished the game with four goals allowed and four saves.
