Di Fato

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Senior Maria Di Fato scored four goals and freshman Erica Geremia added three of her own as fourth-ranked SUNY Cortland clinched the SUNYAC regular-season title with a 16-9 win against 14th-ranked Fredonia State.

Di Fato and Geremia each added an assist to their respective point totals. Freshman Tara Monaghan had two goals and an assist, while junior Taylor Robinson and senior Gina Campese each scored twice. Senior Shauna Hutchinson made four saves.

Fredonia State was playing without leading scorer Katie Kleine, who is out with a season-ending injury. Marissa Cussins led the Blue Devils with four goals and an assist. Kaila Fox scored twice and Katie Glagolev registered a goal and three assists. Casey Chiesa made 10 saves, five in each half.

Cortland took a 3-0 lead nine minutes into the game on goals by Di Fato, Emma Hayes-Hurley and Liz Beville. Leading 4-2, the Red Dragons tallied the final five goals of the half, starting with Di Fato’s goal at the 9:15 mark and ending with a Geremia goal with 3:10 remaining, to take a 9-2 advantage.

Fredonia used a 6-1 run in the first 20 minutes of the second half to turn a 10-2 deficit into an 11-8 game. Cussins scored her four goals during that stretch, including three in a row in a seven-minute window. Cortland, however, put the game away with four consecutive goals with less than 10 minutes left -- two by Geremia and one each by Di Fato and Nicole Bello.
