BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -The Southwestern Athletic Conference will induct six new members into its Hall of Fame, including former major league pitcher Dennis “Oil Can” Boyd.
Boyd played three seasons at Jackson State and spent 10 in the majors with Texas, Montreal and Boston – helping lead the Red Sox to the 1986 World Series.
Other inductees include Texas Southern track star Clyde Duncan, Southern football and track All-American Charlie Granger and ex-Grambling basketball star and NCAA scoring leader Aaron James. James was a first-round NBA draft pick by the New Orleans Jazz in 1974.
Two former Alcorn State coaches will also be inducted Dec. 9. Willie “Rat” McGowan won 701 games as baseball coach and was also a football assistant. Shirley Walker’s 493 wins in 30 seasons is the SWAC women’s basketball record.
