CARROLLTON, Ga. (AP) -West Georgia athletic director Ed Murphy announced on Friday that he will retire at the end of the month.

Murphy also coached basketball at West Georgia from 1993-2007 and before that at Mississippi, West Alabama and Delta State. He said he has been thinking of retiring for some time but wanted to make sure a football stadium project was completed before he left.

"I probably would have retired last June had it not been for the delays there," he said.

During his tenure at West Georgia, the Braves won 12 Gulf South Conference championships and three NCAA regional titles.

Murphy has endured two battles with cancer in recent years, but said the decision had nothing to do with health reasons.
