PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Brown is delaying until next fall a decision on whether it will eliminate four varsity sports programs.

Brown President Ruth Simmons made the announcement Friday, saying students, faculty and alumni need more time to weigh the proposal.

The delay means the men’s and women’s fencing, women’s skiing and men’s wrestling teams will compete in the next school year.

A panel reviewing Brown’s athletic programs recommended last week that the university eliminate those varsity teams. University leaders had planned to take up the proposal next month, but Simmons says she will instead submit a recommendation in October.
