WEST POINT, N.Y. – Wesley Hess and Stephen Scherer earned medalist honors in air rifle and smallbore respectively as Army posted season highs in air rifle and the combined scoring, but came up short against Texas Christian in closing out its fall slate Saturday afternoon at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.

The Black Knights (5-4) tied TCU in air rifle as both combined for a 2336, but the Frogs outpointed their host 2297-2284 in smallbore to capture the match by a 4633-4620 margin. TCU, ranked fourth in the Collegiate Rifle Association’s preseason, improved to 5-1 with the decision, while Army was sixth in that poll.

Hess, claiming medalist honors for the sixth time this season in air rifle, fired a 588 in edging TCU’s Erin Lorenzen and Lauren Sullivan who posted identical 587s in tying for runner-up honors. Scherer was fourth with a 586 while Sara Lehman (583), John Manzano (579) and Kelly Buck (578) grabbed the sixth through eight spots as five Black Knights were among the top eight shooters. Lehman, firing a personal best, joined Manzano, Scherer and Hess on Army’s four-man firing unit that bettered Army’s previous high by six points with a 2336.

Scherer earned medalist honors for the eighth time in besting the field in smallbore a 583. TCU grabbed the next three spots, while Army’s Patrick Northam finished fifth with a 572 in leading a Black Knight sweep of the next three spots with Thomas Carr and Manzano firing identical 571s.  Manzano, Carr and Hess (559) made up Army’s unit that combined for a 2284, which was 13 points off TCU’s winning mark. Both Northam and Carr posted personal best as several Black Knights turned in their best marks of the season, while Army’s 4620 aggregate broke its previous high of 4616 set against West Virginia.

“This was by far our best performance of the season,” noted head coach Ron Wigger, caught in the midst of a rebuilding year. “It is a nice way to end the fall season.”

Army will be idle for two months, opening the winter portion of its 2008-09 slate Jan. 17 when the Black Knights head to Palmyra, Pa., for a match against Ohio State along with looking to defend their title at the Palmyra Tournament.
