Virginia earns preseason No. 1

Top five includes two Ivy League and two Pac-10 schools

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia rowing team claimed the top spot in the preseason USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division I coaches poll.

Virginia earned 18 first-place votes and 477 points to garner the No. 1 ranking. Princeton was No. 2 (450 points, five first-place votes) and California was No. 3 (440 points, one first-place vote). 

Rounding out the top five were No. 4 Stanford and No. 5 Brown. Yale, which ranked sixth, earned the other first-place vote from the coaches.

“We appreciate the respect the pollsters have given us,” Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer said. “But we realize the poll at the end of the year is the one that counts.”

Virginia opened its spring season with a successful scrimmage against Michigan State on March 12 in Marion, Va. The Cavaliers are the defending NCAA champions.
