Fla. Tech wins six races in two days
Panthers' varsity eight beats Charleston by 41.3 seconds
FELLSMERE, Fla. – Florida Tech will head to the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships in two weeks with some momentum following its performance at the DII Duals Friday and Saturday at Canal 54.
The Panthers, wrapped up the regatta with four first-place finishes in the final day. In the first of 13 scheduled races, Tech’s varsity eight sounded the air horn a whopping 41.3 seconds before University of Charleston at 7:15.7. In the afternoon, Fairfield was its next victim as the Crimson and Gray won by 17.4 seconds with a time of 7:15.6.
With the eight beginning the day on a good note, the Panthers’ Varsity Four rose to the occasion. The crew beat University of Charleston by 49.7 seconds, 8:08.5 to 8:58.2 in the morning. Then, in the second to the last race, they flew past Fairfield, crossing the line at 8:14.5, which was 31.4 seconds before their opposition.
Tech’s freshman/novice four also competed Saturday against Fairfield and finished second with 8:35.2.
In the first day of the DII Duals, Florida Tech captured two first-place finishes, in the varsity eight and four, Friday evening at Canal 54.
Against the University of California, San Diego, the Panthers’ eight clocked in 12.8 seconds ahead of their counterpart with a time of 7:17.7.
Tech’s varsity four, who also raced against the Tritons, won by an impressive 20.2 seconds. Its official time was 8:30.1 compared to California, San Diego’s 8:50.3.
