COLUMBUS, Ohio – The ninth-ranked Ohio State rowing team played host to the Big Ten Duals on Saturday on the Scioto River at Griggs Reservoir. The Buckeyes had a successful afternoon, winning 11 of 12 races. The duals were divided between a morning and afternoon session. Ohio State raced against Louisville and Bucknell in the morning and Iowa and Rhode Island during the afternoon session.
The Buckeyes had a perfect start in the morning, winning all six races. The Second Varsity Four had the outstanding performance of the morning as it beat Louisville by 47.3 seconds with a time of 7:34.9. The 2V4 of Ashley Dzurnak, Lindsey Titus, Emily Ralph and Katherine Tylinski were led by coxswain Kristin DiJosie.
Coxswain MacKenzie Pecor guided the First Varsity Four of Jill Mohr, Kara Shropshire, Stephanie Johnson and Sarah Cornish to a victory against Louisville and Bucknell with a time of 7:37.3 Louisville came in at 7:43.4 and Bucknell finished at 7:57.6.
The Scarlet and Gray topped Louisville and Bucknell in the Second Varsity Eight. The 2V8 of Cori Meinert, Tess Prescott, Ingrid Aasaaren, Samantha Fowle, Mandy Merritt, Caroline McPherson, Anniken Ellingsen, Kate Sweeney and coxswain Samantha Getz finished the race at 6:48.6, 8.59 seconds ahead of Louisville and 10.84 ahead of Bucknell.
The First Varsity Eight wrapped up the morning with an intense race as it was neck and neck with Louisville all the way down the river. Louisville had a two-seat advantage against Ohio State in the first 1,000 meters of the race. In the second half of the race Ohio State pulled ahead and won with a time of 6.40.2, just .56 seconds ahead of the Cardinals. Bucknell finished in 6:59.8. The 1V8 is composed of coxswain Erika Benford, Ellen Heister, Allison Elber, Claudia Schiwy, Ulrike Denker, Claudia Herpertz, Carolin Helmholz, Claire-Louise Bode and Emily Walsh.
The First Novice Eight boat won by a substantial margin of three-boat lengths. The 1N8 came in at 6:56.7 ahead of Louisville at 7:14.6. The Second Novice Eight topped both Iowa and Indiana coming in at 7:20.5.
The afternoon session began with a photo finish in the Second Novice Eight race against Indiana and Iowa. Iowa just squeezed ahead of Ohio State finishing at 7:41.5 with the Buckeyes coming in .28 seconds later.
The First Novice Eight recorded the first win of the afternoon, racing Iowa. The 1N8 clocked in at 7:04.8 with Iowa finishing at 7:12.7.
With its second impressive win of the day, the 2V4 beat Iowa by 36.8 seconds. The Buckeyes came across the finish at 7:39.8 after leading the way the entire race by as much as 100 meters.
In the 1V4, Ohio State started with an early lead which it kept extending. By the 1,000 meter mark the Buckeyes had a length and a half of open water head of Iowa with the same distance between Iowa and Rhode Island. The Scarlet and Gray finished the race at 7:44.0, 16.2 ahead of Iowa (8:00.2) and finishing third was Rhode Island (8:16.3).
Recording the fourth victory of the afternoon, the 2V8 led the way the entire race. At the 1,000 meter mark the Buckeyes held a boat length lead over Iowa and continued to extend their lead to the finish.
In the final race of the afternoon, the 1V8 pulled ahead of Iowa and Rhode Island early and held the lead. The Buckeyes extended their lead to almost two-boat lengths of water at the final crossing and finished in 6:58.2. Iowa finished behind them at 7:04.0 with Rhode Island pulling up the end at 7:14.5
