WORCESTER, Mass.--The William Smith rowing team's top two boats left Lake Quinsigamond with victories in races against Tufts, WPI, and Mills this afternoon. The Herons' top crews also earned victories on Saturday in competition against Skidmore and Middlebury.

Both the varsity eight and second varsity eight trailed in the early parts of the 2,000-meter races, but stayed composed to win with a strong final sprint.

The varsity eight of Kenzie Cannon, Alexandra Bowers, Kerry O'Neill, Anne Wakeman, Emily Maguire, Crary Chandler, Jamie Billington, Claire Brown, and Caitlin Holtz crossed the finish line in 6 minutes, 50.52 seconds, 9.5 tenths of a second ahead of the second place Jumbos. The host Engineers were third followed by the Cyclones.

The second varsity eight of Abbie DiPalma, Alaria Pizzo, Kara Ruskin, Maggie Smith, Kirsten Cooper, Rebecca Charlton, Emily Desmery, Jenna Lohre, and Tallarie Thurgood overcame a larger deficit in the final 500 meters and won by a larger margin than the first varsity. William Smith turned in a time of 6:58.7, 3.19 seconds faster than Tufts A. Tufts B and WPI rounded out the field.

"The varsities raced well today, building on their races from yesterday," Head Coach Sandra Chu said. "Both boats relied on strong sprints to surge past their competitors. I'm proud of the way that they raced--these were tight races and anyone could have found the extra gear. We utilized our tools and found it first."

The William Smith novice eight was fourth in a four boat field, clocking in at 7:31.84, just 4.39 seconds out of second place. The Heron varsity four was third out of three boats, posting a time of 8:04.52.

William Smith will return to the water on April 25, when the Herons travel to Canton, N.Y., to compete in the Liberty League Championships.
