Dartmouth maintains hold on first
Vermont puts four skiers in top six in women's 5K classic
STOWE, Vt. –- The Dartmouth Big Green remain in first place after the second day of racing at the UVM Carnival. Dartmouth has a total of 675 points and leads New Hampshire (558 pts), Middlebury (538 pts) and Vermont (493 pts).
In the women's 5K classic the Catamounts put four skiers in the top six, but Dartmouth's Sophie Caldwell posted a time of 15:48 to earn a seven second victory against UVM's Caitlin Patterson. Patterson was followed by teammates Amy Glen, Anja Gruber and Lucy Garrec who finished fourth through sixth, respectively.
In the men's race, Patrick Johnson of Middlebury outpaced Dartmouth's Sam Tarling by 0.30 seconds. Senior Franz Bernstein paced the Catamounts, finishing third with a time of 28:20.60. Fritz Horst, sixth, and Dylan Grald, 10th, rounded out the top three skiers for Vermont.
In the men's slalom, Colton Hardy paced the Catamounts, finishing ninth. Taylor Wunsch was 10th overall and Kevin Drury rounded out the top three UVM skiers in 21st place.
Middlebury's Hig Roberts won the race with a time of 1:43.31 and was followed by Ben Morse of Dartmouth and Paul Atkinson of UNH.
Senior Amanda McDonald was the only Catamount to finish both runs in the women's slalom. She placed 21st overall with a time of 1:58.06.
Williams took the top two spots on the podium behind Geordie Lonza's winning time of 1:49.89. Teammate Laurel Carter was second and Avril Dunleavy of Bates placed third.
The UVM alpine squads were without Tim Kelley, Jonathan Nordbotten, Kate Ryley, and Elli Terwiel, who were off racing in the Vail NorAm series this week.
