NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Christopher Newport University men’s soccer team, ranked second in the nation, breezed past the Marietta College (0-3-3) Pioneers tonight by a final score of 4-0. Leading scorer Brian Lybert (Honolulu, Hawaii) added two more goals as the Captains improved to 6-0-0 this season while outshooting Marietta 37-4.
CNU jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first half, as Chris Thome (Montclair, Va.) tallied the eventual gamewinner at the 13:59 mark, followed quickly by Lybert’s first score at the 15:04 mark. The two goals, just over a minute apart from eachother, gave the Captains a quick cushion that would not be relinquished.
Thome’s goal came off a Steven Farmer (Poquoson, Va.) assist from the center to the left side of the box, where he unleashed a laser into the top of the goal.
Andrew Bonorden (Yorktown, Va.) assisted on Lybert’s goal, crossing the ball in from the left side and finding Lybert open on the back side for an open look.
CNU would again score quick back-to-back goals in the second half, as junior Danny Franklin (Williamsburg, Va.) posted his first career tally in the 62nd minute of play. He was assisted by Winston Mattheison (Norfolk, Va.) on a low line drive into the center of the goal. Lybert would add a penalty kick goal in the 67th minute for the final score.
CNU peppered the Marietta goalkeeper, Chris Stollar, all night, with 19 shots on goal in the first 72 minutes of action. He made 15 saves, allowing the four goals. Bobby Thaxton relieved him for the final 18:23, making two saves.
The Captains shared a shutout between Justin Wolfe and Colin Whittington, as Wolfe was forced to make just one save in the game.
