LOS ANGELES – Davis Paul scored a golden goal in the 99th minute to give
No. 12 California a 1-0 overtime victory over No. 11 UCLA on a cloudy
Sunday afternoon at Drake Stadium. The Golden Bears took possession of the
Pac-10 Conference lead back from the Bruins by improving their Pac-10
record to 5-1-1. Cal improved its overall record to 9-2-3, while the
Bruins fell to 10-4-1 (5-2-0 Pac-10).
The goal marked the senior forward’s team-leading sixth of the season, and
the match marked Cal’s eighth overtime game of the year as well as the
Bears’ third consecutive OT game.
Senior defender Demitrius Omphroy and sophomore forward John Fitzpatrick
combined to set up Paul, who fired past UCLA goalkeeper Brian Rowe from
the top of the Bruins’ box to end the match at the 98:36 mark.
Cal turned the tables on UCLA, which had taken the Pac-10 lead away from
the Bears in the Bruins’ 1-0 double-overtime victory on Oct. 17 in
Berkeley.
Along with Paul, David Bingham starred for Cal today, as the junior
goalkeeper made eight saves against the Bruins, which outshot the Bears,
25-13, on their Senior Day.
The Bears had their chances to end the game in regulation, including two
just seconds apart in the 24th minute, as Paul caromed a shot off the UCLA
crossbar. Fitzpatrick followed up with a bicycle kick that Rowe saved.
Cal winds up the regular season with a three-game homestand, including
games against Oregon State on Oct. 24 and versus Washington on Oct. 31 on
Goldman Field at Edwards Stadium.
