WHITEWATER, Wis. -Mohamed Sankoh (FY, St. Paul, Minn.) scored an unassisted goal with 26 seconds left in the second overtime, sending the Augsburg College men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over the College of St. Scholastica in an NCAA Division III men’s soccer first-round playoff game on Saturday night at Fiskum Field.
Augsburg (16-4-1 overall) will advance to play host Wisconsin-Whitewater (13-2-3 overall), which topped Macalester (14-5-1) 2-0 in the other first-round game on Saturday evening in Whitewater. The game will be on Sunday (11/14) at 6 p.m. at Whitewater.
Sankoh blocked a St. Scholastica (17-4-2) pass, then slipped behind a defender to score his fourth goal of the season – all coming in the last three weeks. He scored his first collegiate goal in a 1-0 win over Gustavus on Oct. 29, which clinched a MIAC playoff berth for the Auggies, then scored two goals, including an overtime game-winner, in Augsburg’s 3-2 MIAC playoff championship game win last Friday.
In a game played in windy conditions with drizzle in Whitewater, the Auggies outshot the Saints by a 14-4 margin, including an 11-3 advantage in the second half and overtime.
Augsburg goalkeeper Will Morlock (FY, Grand Haven, Mich.) made one save to score his eighth shutout of the season – and fourth in the last five games for the Auggies.
St. Scholastica goalkeeper Sam Reed had seven saves, including five in the second half and first overtime, when Augsburg was playing with the wind at its back.
