WHITEWATER, WIS. -
Macalesters Reid Usedom had a chance to put Macalester ahead at 11:27, but UW-Ws Matt Mikesell made the save, and Whitewaters Trevor Swentik was thwarted by Macalester keeper Mark Mullaney at 13:52 to keep the game scoreless. Mikesell also stopped Robin Forslund at 16:53. The Warhawks finally broke through with a flurry near the 29:00 mark, beginning with a shot by Kevin Kron that Mullaney stopped, but the ball rebounded to Whitewaters Dan Montanye who got a shot off that was blocked by a Scots defender, and Swentik finally followed that ricochet with a goal at 29:36. Neither team scored again until the 66:47 mark, when UW-W was awarded a penalty kick and Montanye put it in for the final goal of the game. The Whitewater defense tightened, and Macalester had to play into a strong wind, as the Scots went the rest of the game without a shot. Whitewater out-shot Macalester 15-6, had a 7-5 edge in corner kicks, and committed 10 fouls to 12 for the Scots. UW-W, 13-2-2, will play the winner of Saturdays other first round match in Whitewater, matching Augsburg College and the College of Saint Scholastica. Whitewater is ranked 15th in the two national Division III soccer polls.
