COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Matt Kassel scored a goal and added an assist as second-seeded Maryland toppled, Penn, 4-0, Sunday in the second round of the 2010 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship.
John Stertzer, Greg Young and Patrick Mullins joined Kassel as goal-scorers to propel Maryland (18-2-1), winners of 14 straight, to the round-of-16 for the ninth consecutive season.
Stertzer netted the eventual game-winner at 8:03 when his six-yard strike went right of diving Penn keeper Ben Berg. Jason Herrick picked up the assist on the score after his through-ball reached Stertzer in the middle of the box. Kassel tallied his ninth goal of the year when he capitalized on his second penalty kick opportunity in as many games in the 26th minute after Casey Townsend was dragged down in the box.
Young capped the first half scoring with his first career goal at 43:24 off a deflected assist from Kassel. His strike from eight yards sailed high of Berg and kissed the crossbar for a commanding 3-0 Terrapin lead. Mullins padded the lead to four after shaking a pair of Quaker defenders near the far post and tacking on an unassisted score from 10 yards with 2:22 remaining in the match.
Zac MacMath secured Maryland's 14th shutout of the season with four saves against the Quakers. Penn (13-6) had surrendered only 12 goals all season prior to the Terps' three-goal outburst Sunday.
"I'm very happy with the overall performance of our team today...I thought it was a complete performance," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "Penn is a very good team. When we have our legs and our energy, we can control the tempo of the game. Tonight, I thought our guys benefited from a week of preparation and rest. The score is a little flattering because that is a very good Penn team. I'm very pleased to be moving on."
Maryland faces a rematch of last year's NCAA second round tilt when it plays host to No. 15 Penn State at Ludwig Field next Sunday. Game time is slated for 5 p.m. and will be webcast live on NCAA.com/allaccess.
