CHAPEL HILL, N.C. 9 Junior midfielder Frank Ambrosio scored in the second minute of play, and the George Washington defense withstood 17 shots and 15 corner kicks from North Carolina, as the Colonials (10-8-4) held on for a 1-0 victory over the Tar Heels (10-9-2) Friday at Fetzer Field in first round action of the 2004 NCAA Men¹s Soccer Championship. Off a Colonial throw-in into the box, midfielder Trevor Martin got a head on the ball and flicked it toward Ambrosio, who headed it downward and toward UNC goalkeeper Ford Williams at the near post. Williams made a stop on the ball, but not before it crossed the goalline, giving GW a one-goal advantage at the 1:26 mark. The score was Ambrosio¹s team-best seventh goal of the season.

Neither team was able to get much going in the rest of the second half, but the Colonials outshot the Tar Heels, 7-6, in the period. Carolina¹s best first half scoring opportunity came on a header by Blake Beach in the 13th minute that was saved at the near post by a GW defender.
