CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Virginia men's soccer team recorded a 2-1 victory over the visiting American Eagles in a second round match of the 2004 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championships in front of 933 spectators at UVa's Klockner Stadium. Virginia turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win by scoring back-to-back goals after falling behind 1-0 early in the second period to record their 18th victory of the season. The Cavaliers' Will Hall scored the game-winning goal at 67:10 to break a 1-1 tie, giving Virginia the one-goal victory.

After both teams played a scoreless first half of soccer, American took a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the second period at 47:17 when Sal Caccavale scored the first goal of the match. The Eagles' Garth Juckem and Gordon Templeman teamed together to set up Caccavale's one-timer that beat UVa goalkeeper Ryan Burke for AU's first and only goal of the contest. Caccavale's goal was his sixth of the season.

However, Virginia answered American's goal with a score of its own nearly five minutes later and tied the match at 1-1 at 52:08 when Nico Colaluca sent a corner kick to teammate Hunter Freeman. Freeman served up a long cross into the box that went over the head of American goalkeeper Thomas Myers and into the goal for the equalizing score. Freeman's goal was his third of the year.

With the match tied at one apiece, UVa took a 2-1 lead at 67:10 when Hall gathered a loose ball from 25-yards and ripped a one-timer into the back of the AU net for the eventual game-winning goal. Hall's goal was his second game-winner this year.

The Cavaliers withstood a late rally attempt to tie the game by the Eagles, but UVa was able to hold on to secure the one-goal victory.

Virginia's Burke made two saves in the victory, while American's Myers made three saves in the loss.

With the victory, Virginia's record improves to 18-4-0 overall. UVa will now advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The loss drops American's record to 15-6-2 on the year. The Eagles were eliminated from the tournament with the defeat.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, November 27th when Virginia plays the winner of the New Mexico vs. Portland match in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM at Klockner Stadium.
