GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Messiah College defeated UC Santa Cruz, 4-0, and captured the 2004 NCAA Division III championship at Macpherson Stadium on Saturday.
The Falcons earned their third national crown in the last five years. Messiah won previous championships in 2000 and '02 dominating performance against the Banana Slugs was indicative of their entire post season. MC did not allow a goal in its previous five tournament games.
"This team had a tough act to follow, since we had won two national titles in three years," Messiah Head Coach. "But this team lived up to the task and improved all year."
Four different players scored for Messiah. David McClellan led the way for the Falcons with one goal and one assist. "I was on the championship team as a freshman," said McLellan. "But this was more fulfilling because as a junior class we now played a bigger role in the team's success."
Kai Kasiguran tallied in the 12th minute from McClellan for the match's first score.Pat Lenehan scored in the 28th minute and Dan Visser found the net in the 33rd minute. MC led 3-0 at halftime. Seth Lehman and Andre Burckhart earned assists respectively on the goals.
McClellan made the score 4-0 in the 88th minute. Bryan Mohney earned the assist.
The Falcons out shot the Banana Slugs, 12-9. Dustin Schambach garnered three saves for MC and Christopher Pederson stopped five shots for UC Santa Cruz.
