DURHAM, N.C. -- ACC Rookie of the Year Michael Videira scored the game-winning goal and assisted on the other two as Duke defeated Ohio State by a 3-0 score in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Fellow freshman Spencer Wadsworth also chipped in two assists. Duke advances to the quarterfinals where they will face Virginia. The match is tentatively scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. in Charlottesville.
In the first half, both teams saw several scoring chances, but only the Blue Devils were able to convert. In the 11th minute, junior Danny Kramer tossed a throw-in to Videira who dribbled through three defenders and beat Buckeye goalie Ray Burse, Jr. on the near post to give Duke a 1-0 lead.
In the 34th minute, Duke had the chance for a second goal when Burse was caught wandering, but Wadsworth's shot on the open net hit the post and freshman Zachary Pope's attempt off the rebound sailed over the crossbar.
Ohio State continued a steady attack in the second half but, despite multiple chances, could not break through. In the 83rd minute, Wadsworth's cross was tipped by Videira. Kramer collected the ball and flipped it past Burse to give Duke an insurance goal. Only 32 seconds later, the Blue Devils iced the game when Wadsworth and Videira put together another cross that found junior Blake Camp in front of the goal mouth. The All-ACC midfielder buried it easily and Duke advanced with a 3-0 victory.
Duke goalkeeper Justin Trowbridge made three saves in getting his eighth shutout of the season while Burse also made three stops. The Blue Devils outshot the Buckeyes by an 11-6 margin.
Duke and Virginia have played twice this season, with the Cavaliers winning both meetings. On Oct. 23, Duke lost in overtime after losing two players to red cards. In the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament, the Cavaliers topped the Blue Devils, 3-1.
