Calvin 4, Edgewood 0

Nov. 9, 2005

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- A 14-year drought is now over for the Calvin men's soccer team while its season is still very much alive.

Calvin picked up its first NCAA III Tournament victory since 1991 Wednesday afternoon at Calvin's Marvin A. Zuidema Soccer Field, defeating Edgewood (WI) 4-0 in a first round NCAA III Tournament game.

Calvin (16-4-1) will travel to second-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University (20-0) Saturday night for a second round game scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. at Ohio Wesleyan's Roy Rike Field.

Saturday's game will mark the fifth meeting between Calvin and Ohio Wesleyan in NCAA III Tournament play with the Ohio Wesleyan winning three of the four prior meetings.

Prior to its game with Edgewood (12-9-0) on Wednesday, Calvin's last NCAA III Tournament victory had been a 2-0 win at Kenyon College in 1991. Calvin advanced to the NCAA III Tournament a year ago but suffered a 1-0 overtime defeat to Wartburg College in a second round game at Calvin.

Calvin went scoreless through the first 37 minutes of Wednesday's game with Edgewood but broke through on a goal by junior Nick Capisciolto with 7:47 remaining in the first half. Capisciolto had nearly scored on a point-blank shot minutes earlier but made no mistake on his second shot of the game, heading a cross from senior Kurt Visker past Edgewood goalkeeper Ryan Flohr.

With a one-goal lead, Calvin picked up the tempo in the second half and capitalized quickly as sophomore Jared Litty whipped a shot just inside the far post from 15-yards out after receiving a well-placed pass from senior Levi Kool.

Moments later, an Edgewood player was issued a red-card, giving Calvin a man-advantage for the final 37 minutes of play. Calvin used the advantage to its advantage, scoring two insurance goals with senior Matt Cosnek tapping in a pass from Capisciolto in the 60th minute and Litty scoring in the 69th minute with Capisciolto drawing an assist on the play.

Wednesday's game was played in a strong cross-wind that featured gusts of up to 25 miles per hour. The conditions had an affect on the Knights initially said Calvin coach Chris Hughes. "We were a little tentative coming out and some of that was nerves and some of that was getting used to playing with that wind," said Hughes. "We started picking up the pace with about 10 minutes left in the half and once Capisciolto got that first goal, we played very well." The pair of goals by Litty boosted his team-leading total to 14 while Capisciolto boosted his team-leading assist total to 17, tying the Calvin single-season assist record originally set by Joey Barone in 1991. Kool now has 11 assists on the season which ranks as the eighth-best single-season total in Calvin men's soccer history.

Calvin finished Wednesday's game with a 29-6 shots at goal advantage. Senior Joe Westra and freshman Matt Gardner combined on the shutout in goal for the Knights with Westra picking up two saves in 73 minutes of play.

Calvin is making its sixth appearance in the NCAA III Tournament and is now 4-5 in NCAA III Tournament play.
