Wisconsin-Milwaukee 2, Bradley 0

Nov. 18, 2005

PEORIA, Ill. -- Wisconsin-Milwaukee (14-4-4) scored a goal in each half and freshman goalkeeper Grant Fernstrum made five saves for his fifth consecutive shutout, leading the Panthers to a 2-0 victory at Bradley (15-6-1) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday night at Shea Stadium.

Wisconsin-Milwaukee, which equalled its school season record with its 12th shutout, advances to the second round and will visit the No. 2 seed and top-ranked New Mexico (15-1-2) Tuesday night in Albuquerque. Bradley was making its third appearance in the NCAA Tournament, but like the first two appearances in 2000 and 20002, the Braves were knocked out at home in the first round.

Panther junior forward Steve Sperl scored his fifth goal of the season in opportunistic fashion to net what proved to be the game-winner. Bradley defender Jeff Kellogg attempted to head a high-bouncing ball back to Bradley keeper Chris Dunsheath near the top of the 18, but he did not get much on the attempt. Sperl pounced on the loose ball and fired a low ball under the sliding Bradley keeper for a 1-0 lead at 11:00.

Wisconsin-Milwaukee used tremendous teamwork for the second goal in the 51st minute. Neil Dombrowski started the scoring play by serving a ball across the penalty area to Tenzin Rampa on the right flank. Rampa sent the ball to the near post, where Andre Francois headed home his third goal of the season at 50:13.

Bradley's best chance to get back into the game came less than two minutes later when midfielder Steve Chromik left-footed a shot from the top of the 18 that hit the inside of the left post, but bounced back out across the front of the goal.

Both teams had their share of chances to add to the scoring as the match played out, but both keepers came through with some clutch saves. Pressing forward down the stretch, Bradley turned a 12-6 halftime shots deficit into a 24-21 edge by the game's end. Dunsheath, who ended his career third in NCAA Division I history by playing 8,197 minutes, tied his season-high with seven saves as the Panthers put 10 of their 21 shots on target. Bradley's Drew DeGurian added a diving header to save a Francois shot in the 81st minute. Bradley managed to get just five of its 24 shots on frame and Fernstrum stopped the all, including a one-on-one blast from DeGurian with 14 minutes to go.

Friday's loss ends the careers of 12 Bradley seniors, including 11 who played versus the Panthers. The majority of the group also played a role in Bradley's 2002 NCAA Tournament appearance and combined for 738 appearances for the Braves. During their four seasons, Bradley compiled a 50-26-12 (.636) record, won the 2005 MVC regular-season championship, played in three MVC Tournament championship games and earned two at-large invitations to the NCAA Tournament.
