Nov. 19, 2005

DURANGO, Colo. - The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team defeated California State University-Dominguez Hills 3-2 today in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II playoffs.

The victory advances the Skyhawks (20-0-1) to their first Final Four since 1999, when Fort Lewis lost 2-1 in double overtime to Southern Connecticut State in the Division II national championship game.

Junior forward John Cunliffe (Edgworth, England) blasted a shot inside the far post to give Fort Lewis (20-0-1) a 1-0 lead 11:23 into the game. The goal, Cunliffe's 17th of the season, was assisted by senior defender Sean Flanagan (Franktown).

CSU-Dominguez Hills (17-5-2) knotted the score at 22:41 when sophomore midfielder Sammy Rivas chipped a shot over senior Skyhawk goalie Nick Clark (Durango). Rivas' score - his sixth of the year - was set up by a crossing pass from sophomore forward Kei Kamara.

The Skyhawks regained the lead at 42:23 when senior forward Cole Sweetser (N. Richland Hills, Texas) converted a penalty kick. Moments earlier, Sweetser was taken down in the box by Toros defender.

Sweetser extended the lead to 3-1 at 57:31 when he and junior midfielder Casey Roberts (Farmington) ran a give-and-go play. The fancy footwork led to Sweetser's school-record 26th goal of the year.

The Toros would not go down quietly, though, as senior forward Francisco Corona knocked in his 10th goal of the season at 86:19.

Junior goalkeeper Kyle Polack kept the Toros close in the first half by making five saves. He added a sixth save in the second half. Clark stopped four shots for the Skyhawks. CSU-Dominguez Hills outshot the Skyhawks 13-12.

The physical game featured 45 fouls - 23 on the Toros and 22 on the Skyhawks.
