(Nov. 22) The fourth-ranked Emory University Men’s Soccer team saw its record-setting season come to a close on Saturday, as the Eagles were defeated by the Christopher Newport University Captains 2-0 in the round of 16 of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer tournament.
Playing on the campus of Christopher Newport University, in Newport News, VA, the Captains took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute of the game, as Bryan Davis scored from a long shot, taken 35 yards outside the goal.
Christopher Newport would later take advantage of the Eagles’ pressing for a late goal, as in the 75th minute, Nao Masuda was able to score on a two-on-one breakaway, off an assist from Winston Mattheisen.
The Eagles had opportunities throughout the match, taking 14 shots, nine of which were on goal. Emory was unable to convert, however, as Captain’s goalkeeper Justin Wolfe was able to make nine saves in the victory. Meanwhile, the Emory defense held the Captains to 10 shots, four of which were on goal.
The match ends the careers of 11 Emory seniors, including the school’s second all-time scorer, Patrick Carver, and Patrick McFarland, who is third in school history in assists. Other Emory seniors playing in their last match included Jonathan Laycock, Jordan Edelman, Jacob Roche, Marc Del Marmol, Eric Laney, Andre Jakubowski, Joey Howie, Jack Eisen-Markowitz, and John Darsie.
Emory finishes the season with a 16-2-1 record, matching the school record for victories in a single campaign, while the Captains improved to 17-4-3.
